Hackers are often minors who cannot be prosecuted under the law, even though the penalties are already quite harsh For example, in the US, a hacker who does a mere $5000 of damage can go to jail for ten years The recent Nimda virus attack cost one small company I know over three times that amount In some countries, there are no laws against computer viruses and denial-of-service attacks Hackers who launch these attacks don t think they will ever be caught Indeed, the more Draconian the penalties, the cooler some people think it is to launch an attack Many young hackers don t realize the damage they can do through their activities In fact, there are many cases where hackers who were shown the devastation they caused changed their ways and beliefs overnight Society sends mixed signals to hackers.

26.7.1 Electrodes, Rods, and Fluxes The first specification for mild-steel-covered electrodes, A5.1, was written in 1940. As the welding industry expanded and the number of types of electrodes for welding steel increased, it became necessary to devise a system of electrode classification to avoid confusion. The system used applies to both the mild-steel A5.1 and the lowalloy steel A5.5 specifications. Classifications of mild and low-alloy steel electrodes are based on an E prefix and a four- or five-digit number. The first two digits (or three, in a five-digit number) indicate the minimum required tensile strength in thousands of pounds per square inch. For example, 60 = 60 kpsi, 70 = 70 kpsi, and 100 = 100 kpsi. The next to the last digit indicates the welding position in which the electrode is capable of making satisfactory welds: 1 = all positions flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead; 2 = flat and horizontal fillet welding (see Table 26.1). The last digit indicates the type of current to be used and the type of covering on the electrode (see Table 26.2). Originally a color identification system was developed by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) in conjunction with the AWS to identify the electrode s classification. This was a system of color markings applied in a specific relationship on the electrode, as in Fig. 26.13a. The colors and their significance are

listed in Tables 26.3 and 26.4. The NEMA specification also included the choice of imprinting the classification number on the electrode, as in Fig. 26.13b. Starting in 1964, new and revised AWS specifications for covered electrodes required that the classification number be imprinted on the covering, as in Fig. 26.13b. However, some electrodes can be manufactured faster than the imprinting equipment can mark them, and some sizes are too small to be legibly marked with an imprint. Although AWS specifies an imprint, the color code is accepted on electrodes if imprinting is not practical. Bare mild-steel electrodes (electrode wires) for submerged-arc welding are classified on the basis of chemical composition, as shown in Table 26.5. In this classifying system, the letter E indicates an electrode as in the other classifying systems, but

Whereas on the one hand they are condemned as senseless vandals, the press tends to describe them as lone geniuses and job offers often flood in, once a hacker is caught in the act..

Retrieving CLI query results (continued)

Each call to SQLBindCol() establishes an association between one column of query results (identified by column number) and an application program buffer (identified by its address) With each call to SQLFetch(), the CLI uses this binding to copy the appropriate data value for the column into the program s buffer area When appropriate, a second program data area is specified as the indicator-variable buffer for the column Each call to SQLFetch() sets this program variable to indicate the actual length of the returned data value (for variable-length data) and to indicate when a NULL value is returned The CLI routines in Figure 19-23 can also be used to implement an alternative method of processing query results In this technique, the columns of query results are not bound to locations in the application program in advance.
